Pro players are already finding success in tournament with Luke here in week one, and this isn't all that surprising as the character not only has some very solid tools at his disposal, but is going to take time for those who play as him and those who fight against him to wrap their minds around what exactly Luke is. These are all incredibly interesting traits for a fighter here in Season 5, and players who are experienced in the realm of fighting games would have a field day with Luke's tool set - and they already are. There's a surprising amount of depth to this DLC combatant, with his unique, almost just-frame like combo timings, his blend of zoning with a very different kind of fireball and mid-range control, and a set of V-Triggers that refill over time instead of deplete forcing the opponent to bring the fight to you. different than the rest of the cast, and that's not a bad thing if you're a seasoned player. One thing that's clear about this character is that Capcom is definitely taking the opportunity to give players a taste of what the next Street Fighter game will be like. His special moves are loud and visually appealing, his animations are smooth and polished (except for his awful jump animation), and his extended juggle combos and V-Triggers make him fun to watch and to play - for the most part.
The heavy hitter literally has "flash" written into some of his special move names, and flash-y is a fair description for this character's fighting style. Outside of the stars shaved into the sides of his head and his dog tags, there isn't much that stands out about Luke on the visual front - though this is understandable considering Capcom is grooming him to be the protagonist of the next Street Fighter project and main heroes tend to be more of a blank slate so that the consumer can superimpose themselves onto them and better relate.įrom a casual fan standpoint, I can't imagine players seeing Luke on the character select screen and being wowed when designs like Poison, Seth, Oro, and Gill exist, but fortunately things get much more interesting when transitioning over to Luke's actual tools for combat. The latest contender goes with a fairly tame MMA-style look, replete with tattoos, trunks, and fingerless gloves. As far as design goes, Luke isn't the most interesting we've seen pass through Street Fighter 5. Much like shopping for a new car, the first thing any potential buyer is going to notice is the exterior.
